Review: Student sustainability conference "Energy through synergy"

On May 23 and 24, 2025, the annual networking congress of the student assistants of the Hessian sustainability offices took place at Goethe University Frankfurt - this year under the motto "Resilience and sustainability at universities in times of crisis". The Green Office at the University of Kassel was also represented by two student assistants, Sebastian Ehlers and Florian Grotstück.

Interactive introductory formats, a joint breakfast and cooking together at lunchtime created a pleasant atmosphere for getting to know each other better and engaging in discussions. The first workshop began with a stimulating presentation by Matthias Jakubowski, democracy officer at FragDenStaat, entitled "Resisting the right-wing takeover". A small group of around 15 participants engaged in a lively discussion about how to deal with extremist ideas and the prerequisites for a resilient democracy. On the second day of the congress, creative project ideas were developed in a concluding workshop, working groups were formed and the results were presented in short pitches.

In the face of global crises, working for sustainability requires not only commitment but also perseverance. Mental resilience is therefore an important topic, which was introduced by the three hiking coaches from Network N who were present. At the beginning, between and at the end of the two workshops, there were various mindfulness and meditation exercises, an approach that can help to change perception in such a way that mental resilience is strengthened and empathy is promoted. In combination with the awareness concept, this approach offers a promising opportunity to strengthen social cohesion and ensure sustainable engagement in the long term.

Sustainability begins with ourselves: with the ability to perceive and respectfully reconcile the needs of other living beings, which can be integrated into structural processes as an ethical concept. The congress offered a valuable platform to make the Hessian sustainability network more visible and to engage in a direct exchange that is otherwise not always possible in everyday life.

The universities' Green Offices would also like to make their contribution in the future - for example by removing existing structural barriers and providing impetus for socio-ecological transformation. Although funding has only been secured until this year, the goal is clear: the functioning structures that have been established should be continued. Among other things, the participants of the congress would therefore like to expand the existing Network N and promote exchange so that an efficient transfer of knowledge for the implementation of further projects to promote sustainability at Hessian universities is successful. The next meeting is therefore already being planned and is expected to take place digitally this summer.
