Studying sustainability: University launches unique offensive of new degree programmes

Making a difference with a degree course: Anyone who is convinced that climate protection, social stability and economic reason are urgent and who wants to help shape the transformation to a more sustainable society will find around a dozen new degree programs at the University of Kassel from the winter semester. The courses on offer are unique in this form in Germany. You can enrol now (for some degree programs from July).

Motif of the marketing campaign.

The basic idea is to combine content in specialist disciplines with specialized knowledge on sustainability. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations play a central role, which are applied but also critically scrutinized. The courses on offer range from specialized business law to sustainability communication and materials science. There are a total of nine Bachelor's and two Master's programs. The University of Kassel is thus making an offer to all those young people who want to help shape Germany's transformation to a climate-neutral and fairer society and economy, over and above what the university already offers, such as organic farming or environmental engineering.

"This massive expansion of our program is a feat of strength for us," says the university's President, Prof. Dr. Ute Clement. "But it is worth it. We are convinced that we are addressing a key issue for the coming decades: The stability of our societies will be decided by the issue of sustainability. The demand for transformation specialists is correspondingly high. The career prospects for all those who take and complete these degree programmes are excellent."

Ute Clement adds: "There are studies that show that Only one in two people still see it as their duty to do something about climate change in the interests of future generations. At the University of Kassel, we are convinced that one of the great tasks of our time is to ensure greater sustainability now. We want to deal with this intensively here."

The university management has spent three years preparing for the introduction of the degree programs and has appointed numerous professors to fill the curricula with their questions and content. A marketing team is accompanying the launch with a nationwide campaign to raise awareness throughout Germany.

Vice President Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf, responsible for studies and teaching, is also convinced that the message will be heard: "What we have set up here is unparalleled at any other university in Germany," he emphasizes. "This is a unique selling point for Kassel. We are offering young people a first-class opportunity to shape a sustainable future in their careers with professional expertise."

As for most subjects, the application period started on June 1. The application period only starts in July for the Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Electrical Engineering Systems and the Master's degree in Sustainable Electromobility. All subjects are admission-free and therefore have no "NC".
